I’m Addicted to Wii Sports Resort
By: Keith
Wii Sports Resort was the debut game for the Wii Motion Plus accessory (it’s still one of the few games that uses the improved technology unfortunately). I played it with mild interest for the first few months and then, like with most games, I got bored. But, recently I watched my 5 year old playing the Island Flyover mini-game, tried it myself and got hooked. You may ask “Well, what’s the point of the Island Flyover?” You hold the remote as if you’re tossing a paper airplane and tilt it around to control your character as he flies an airplane over the virtual island. “Well, that seems pretty boring.” You say. The object of the game is to collect points of interest badges, 80 in all. The first 79 took me just two days to find. It’s that last one which got me obsessed. For the life of me, I just couldn’t find it. I flew and flew and I swore the game had made a mistake or something. But, it hadn’t, and I finally found the last badge, earning myself a virtual cottage (with a flag of my face outside) on the island and an enormous sense of accomplishment.
But, that’s not the end of it:
Now I’m obsessed with trying to get 30 points in the basketball 3-point challenge. I got 29 points (which is one miss). Trust me, Wii Sports Resort isn’t going to win any game of the year awards, but if you have an obsessive personality it’s better to just never pick up the dang remote at all than it is to get doomed to trying to perfect every mini-game. If you played the original Wii Sports games you might know what I’m talking about with the baseball home run challenge. Back then I got obsessed with trying to hit 10 home runs. Then I got obsessed with trying to hit them all over 500 feet. Then I got obsessed with hitting them all out of the park. It was an endless set of challenges that I thought I had managed to put behind me. Wii Sports Resorts was dead on the shelf until last week, until it dragged me back in with its extreme cuteness and simplicity.
So, Is it a Good Game?
Yes, it’s a good game. It’s not one of the greats, but the kids really enjoy it and some of the games are addictive. On the other hand, some are complete misses: Canoeing, Wakeboarding and Cycling are all sorta stupid. But, I enjoy the Basketball (3 Point Contest), Bowling, Archery, Swordplay (good exercise), Table Tennis and the Airsports (including Island Flyover and Dogfight). It’s worth buying if you want a game that you can spend 20 minutes at a time on for some good mindless and not ultra-challenging entertainment. In addition, it’s a good introduction to the Wii Motion Plus device. I keep hoping Nintendo releases more games that use it because it makes the Wii a much better console.

Don’t forget your classics like Frogger and Donkey Kong I finaly decided to go online just so I could test my skills against others and I’m hooked I woke up at 4am playing Tiger Woods 2010 only thing I hate about online play is when your beating someone bad they can disconnect and the game is done
STLDADDY: Funny you should mention frogger and Donkey Kong. My 5 year old recently discovered frogger and is absolutely hooked on it. I bought him a collection of the old games for his gameboy. Funny how those games are timeless. He plays it with as much passion as i remember playing it 25 years ago!
We love Wii Sports Resort too. I’m on a quest to get a perfect score in basketball.
MochaDad: The 30 points is elusive for me. I scored 29, but couldn’t get to 30. Haven’t given up yet though!
I’ve had a Wii sitting on a shelf collecting dust for three months taunting me. I just 86′d DirecTV and hooked up a Roku box to stream Netflix to my TV rather than paying $100 month for TV I don’t watch. While I was removing the DVR and setting up the Roku box I also set up the Wii and connected it to my wireless internet. I’m hoping to get my act together and start using the EA Active game I bought at the same time to start some semblance of a fitness routine.

PJ: I’ve been streaming netflix with my xbox. I’m with you, there’s no point in paying 100 bucks a month if you can get everything you want by streaming it. You’re the first person I know of who had a wii that wasn’t hooked up
I have this game too. Archery is what I’m obsessed with

The 3 point basketball contest has a power over me I can’t explain. I play it until my arms get sore. I’ve mastered Archery much to my wife’s chagrin (she beats me at everything). Frizzbie golf is another one I can’t put down.
We don’t have a motion plus, but the game sounds interesting. At some point, what we really need are more controllers. We have four kids, but only two controllers.

The Wii Is a great console, I heard Sony and Xbox are going to emulate the motion controller.
