New video games are downright expensive.  In fact, they’re so expensive that I never buy new ones.  I wait until they’ve been reduced to $19.99 and are sitting in the used rack.  It’s true that I had to wait a few years to get games like The Orange Box and Call of Duty, but I’m not one to wait in line for an iPhone or movie tickets either; thus, I don’t see it as a loss.  60 bucks on a new game is absurd if there are a constant flow of oldies that are just as good and much cheaper.  This brings me to my point about downloadable content from Xbox.  I was poking around my Xbox dashboard yesterday looking for a few fun and cheap games to play.  And lo and behold, I found a few Indie games for a buck each!  And they’re fun!    

The Impossible Game:  Yes, it’s nearly impossible – and stupidly simple to play.  Your character is a square, and your objective is to jump over triangles and to climb and maneuver your way through the games without hitting anything.  There’s one button involved (the A button) and no joystick, and that makes it more basic than even Atari games.  It has a catchy little rhythmic song that goes along with it, too; it’ll have you bopping along with as you die over and over again, each time achieving one more inch through the game.  Imminently addictive.  Neil died 100 times in a row yesterday (unlocked an achievement for his martyrdom) and still wanted to keep going.    

Snowball Fight:  I think this one cost 3 or 4 dollars. I can’t remember.  In any case, it was still totally affordable.  The object is pretty basic.  Cream your friends or the AI with snowballs until they freeze – you win.  My boys have played it for several months on and off without getting bored.  Something about snowballs makes kids go crazy.    

Solar:  Whoever thought of this must have been on drugs at the time, but it works.  Your character – The Sun!  As the Sun you fly around the universe trying to attract planets to orbit you and to get moons to orbit your planets.  The planets can absorb their moons and grow into Earth like bodies.  When that happens, the planets start producing tiny spaceships that zoom around destroying asteroids that get too close.  There are also other solar systems that harbor evil life forms (producing tiny red spaceships) that want to reduce your planets to asteroids, thereby killing your solar system.  Oh, and your sun can be damaged by encounters with other stars.  For one dollar you can’t go wrong.     

Beat Hazard:  At 5 dollars, Beat Hazard is one of the best values on Xbox.  You are a spaceship that shoots stuff in much the same format as the old asteroids game from yore (in the center of the screen twirling around shooting incoming rocks and stuff).  The twist is that Xbox imports your music library from your computer, and the basis for the game becomes your own songs.  Stay alive until your song ends!  The shorter the song the faster the game progresses.    

Apple Jack:  1 Dollar!  Your name is Jack, and your head is an apple.  Anyway, your dog needs rescuing, and you have to go through 5 worlds and 100 Mario Bros. type levels to rescue him.  The difference, is that this game is A DOLLAR!  You get to toss washing machines and ride on pandas.  Random and awesome all wrapped up into one game.  Your kids will love it.   

RC-Air Sim:  It’s a bare bones RC flying simulator.  There are only a few obstacles and 5 or 6 styles of airplanes to try.  You fly them as you would a real remote control airplane (much harder than you might imagine).  My boys take turns playing; one of them crashes, they squeal with joy, and then the other one flies until he crashes, repeat.  They’ve been asking me for a real RC airplane.    

Los videojuegos nuevos son demasiado caros.  De hecho, son tan caros que yo nunca los compro nuevos.  Me espero a que estén rebajados a $19.99 y se encuentren en el estante de juegos usados.  Es cierto que tengo que esperarme algunos años para conseguir videojuegos como The Orange Box y Call of Duty, pero yo no soy del tipo que se espera en colas para comprarse un nuevo iPhone ni siquiera boletos para el cine; por lo tanto, yo no le veo el caso.  60 dólares por un nuevo videojuego es absurdo cuando existe un flujo constante de videojuegos viejitos que son igual de buenos y mucho  más baratos.  Lo que me trae a mi tema acerca de contenido descargable para el Xbox.  Ayer estaba hurgando en el tablero de juegos de mi Xbox buscando algunos videojuegos divertidos y baratos que jugar.  Y quien lo iba a imaginar, que me voy encontrando una serie de videojuegos independientes de ¡a dólar!  ¡Y son bien divertidos!

The Impossible Game: Sí, es casi imposible – y estúpidamente simple para jugar.  Tu personaje es un cuadro, y tu objetivo es brincar sobre triángulos y trepar y maniobrar tu camino a través de los obstáculos del juego sin tocar ninguno.  Solamente requieres el uso de un solo botón (el botón A) y no necesitas de una palanca de juego, y eso le hace incluso más básico que los videojuegos de Atari.  Y también tiene una musiquilla bien pegajosa que toca todo el tiempo; tú te encontrarás cantándola mientras mueres una y otra vez, cada vez alcanzando una pulgada más dentro del juego.  Inmediatamente adictivo.  Ayer Neil murió 100 veces seguidas (abrió un nivel nuevo por su martirio) y aún quería seguirlo jugando.

Snowball Fight: Creo que este nos costó 3 o 4 dólares.  Ya no me acuerdo.  De todos modos, aún es un buen precio.  El objetivo de este juego es básico.  Bate a tus amigos o el AI con bolas de nieve hasta que los congeles – tú ganas.  Mis hijos lo han estado jugando por varios meses sin aburrirse.  Hay algo acerca de las bolas de nieve que vuelve a los niños locos.

Solar: Quien quiera que haya inventado este videojuego ha de haber estado drogado cuando lo diseñó, pero funciona.  Tu personaje – ¡El Sol!  Siendo el sol, tú vuelas por el universo tratando de atraer planetas a tu órbita y tratando de atraer lunas para orbitar tus planetas.  Los planetas pueden absorber sus lunas y crecer para convertirse en cuerpos como la tierra.  Cuando eso ocurre, tus planetas empiezan a reproducir pequeñas navecitas espaciales que giran alrededor de ti y tus planetas destruyendo asteroides que se acerca demasiado.  También hay otros sistemas solares que tienen formas de vida malévolas (produciendo pequeñitas naves espaciales rojas) quienes quieren convertir tus planetas en asteroides, matando de esta manera tu sistema solar.  Ah, y tu sol puede ser dañado con encuentros con otras estrellas.  Por un dólar no puede fallar.

Beat Hazard: Por 5 dólares, Batiendo el Peligro es uno de los más valiosos en Xbox.  Tú eres una nave espacial que dispara, bien parecido al viejo videojuego asteroides de aquellos tiempos (en el centro de la pantalla navegando y disparando a cualquier objeto extraño y rocas que se te acercan).  El chiste de este nuevo videojuego está en que Xbox importa la librería musical de tu computadora, y la base del juego se convierte en tus propias canciones.  ¡Debes mantenerte vivo hasta que termine la canción!  Entre más corta es la canción, más rápido progresa el videojuego.

Apple Jack: ¡1 dólar!  Tu nombre es Jack, y tu cabeza es una manzana.  En fin, tu perro necesita ser rescatado y tú tienes que navegar por 5 mundos y 100 niveles al estilo Mario Bros. para rescatarlo.  La diferencia es que este juego cuesta solo ¡UN DOLAR!  Te toca aventar lavadoras y montar osos pandas.  Aleatorio e impresionante todo empaquetado en un solo juego.  Tus hijos estarán fascinados.

RC-Air Sim: Este es un simulador de aviones de control remoto básico.  Solamente tiene unos cuantos obstáculos y 5 o 6 estilos de aviones para probar.  Tú los operas de la misma manera en que operarías un avión de control remoto (mucho más difícil de lo que te imaginas).  Mis hijos toman turnos jugando este videojuego; cuando uno de ellos choca, los dos dan de carcajadas, y le toca el turno de volar al otro hasta que también choche, y se repite la canción.  Ahora ellos me han estado pidiendo que les compre un avión de control remoto.
