I wrote a guest article for raleighdaddy today.  The topic is SEO advice for new bloggers.  I am pretty new to blogging myself, but I have had the good fortune to know other people who have been nice enough to help me along the way and to give me good advice.  In turn, I’d like to pass that advice on to other people who might be wondering about what SEO is and how they should be using it to help their own blogs.  What I’ve presented is the 14 most basic and useful tips on SEO for bloggers.  Any blogger, not just dad or mom bloggers, should be employing these tips into their content.  Some topics I cover are commenting, tags, pictures, video, auto-responder, consistent content and Top 10 lists.  They are universal truths of the Internet as it applies to blogging.

It is well known that there are many savvy mom-bloggers around.  They have been at this for a while and some of them are downright masters at self promotion.  It pays off, too, as they have huge audiences.  We dad bloggers are a little less sophisticated; we’re playing catch up to the moms out there.  But, that’s okay because we have a niche market.  We aren’t competing directly with them.  What we should be doing though is learning from them.  interrobang1-350x500Check out metropolitan mama for one of my favorite mom bloggers around.  Notice her category tabs at the top of her page? Yeah, she knows a thing or two about SEO.  And probably the best mom blog in existence (or at least that I know of) is 5minutes for mom.  These ladies really have everything going right on their blog. I have yet to see a dad blog that is that sophisticated.  But, we could be the first, right‽  (an interrobang is a punctuation mark that is a combination of an exclamation mark and a question mark – yeah, interesting, I know).

  1. Uh oh! Was my intro too long?

Do you think I should break it into 2 posts, with my intro as a separate post? This is all new to me! :)

Thanks again for the guest post — it was great!

  4. There are some great tips in that post. A lot I’ve heard before, but oftentimes I’m too lazy to make sure I implement them.

I especially like the posts under 1000 words. While occasionally I do run over, I know that I find it hard to read really long posts, so I don’t expect my readers to stay interested that long.

  5. Hi Scott, Yeah the 1000 word rule is really hard for me too. I end up having to cut stuff sometimes just to make it fit. When posts are much longer than that I just skim them. So you’re right, we shouldn’t expect people to stick around for a big long dissertation. Thanks for another visit!

  6. Always helpful to be reminded of these tips. I’d also say it’s a bit like the old real estate rule: location, location, location – except it’s “content, content, content.”

Ultimately, people want to read things that consistently amuse, inform, and engage – and that’s a matter of following your tips you laid out, and writing things of interest to your readers, and doing so – as you said – well.

  9. SEO is something I’ve been wanting to learn in my writing career. I am an article writer, a blogger and a webcontent writer and I wish to do more and to have more. Someday, I plan to just stay home and spend time with my kids, that’s when I am earning enough. I wish it will come soon.
