Keith,
I'm a stay at home dad and e-commerce consultant. I'm always there for my kids when they get off the bus and I review any notes from their teachers, homework, graded papers with them each day. We also always try to play at least 15-20 minutes in the yard with frisbee, soccor, baseball, or with the dog. At night I read bout 30 minutes of books with all of my little ones. It helps to work from home since we adopted 2 more boys this year (5 and 15 out of foster care), bringing our total up to 4 kids.
My wife is a full time teacher, it's always been her passion and I come from a family of teachers (mom a teacher for 20+ years, sister a teacher and principal). I wish I had the patience to be a homeschooling dad, nut I don't think I do. I respect highly what you do.
  Sincerely,
David

Hi Scott. Yeah, I remember my dad riding a shovel when I was little. I remember thinking "that's weird", but then I tried it myself a few years back and it's pretty fun :-) And, you're right, I forgot to mention that a shovel can also be used to drag other people around!

I'll take the bonus shovel any day. Well, not for me personally, but I enjoy wizzing my daughter around on a good metal grain scoop. The fact that she's riding a shovel makes me laugh.

BigLittleWolfe, I have been unable to find a metal saucer for the last few years. They probably still exist but definitely not as common as they should be. The plastic ones aren't bad I guess, but a saucer should really be metal. Cardboard! I've seen people doing that. I should have entered a category of homemade sleds!

What a cool (cough, cough) post! Seriously - this is fabulous - a comparison of sledding methods for cost, effectiveness and safety! (You really can't get the metal saucers any more? Those were our faves, growing up in New England.) I will say, in a pinch, if the hill is steep enough and the snow packed, you can break down a large carton and tear down the slope on cardboard! Woo hoo!
