What do you Want to Be?
By: Keith

Everybody, at some point, decides they want to do something with their lives, some profession to earn money and define the direction of their lives. Most people also go through phases. My earliest career decision, maybe I was 7, was that I wanted to be a scientist. I also wanted to be an astronaut, and athlete and an engineer. Somewhere along the way I even wanted to be a hobo which I’m not sure could actually be considered a life ambition more than a realistic consummation of the direction I was taking. My parents thought it was right up my alley. Then, starting in 8th grade, I determined to be a writer. I’m not spectacular at it, yet; but I’m no slouch either. I’ve realized my goal by writing this blog. Everybody needs something, no matter how small, at which they can point and say they’re trying their best. This blog is my thing. I’m good at several things, but this is where I’m hanging my hat for now.
My youngest son’s most recent epiphany is that he wants to write movie scripts. He’s 5 and his film ideas aren’t complicated, but it shows he’s thinking. It also shows how unique a person he is. He’s seen me on my computer working and typing, but he came up with the script writer idea all by himself. In fact yesterday he went so far as to write out his script idea and model it with his action figures. Here he is explaining the whole thing:
And here’s his “script”. He wrote it all by himself and I’m proud of him. What do your kids want to do with themselves? What did you want to do when you were a kid? Are your kids interested in what you do?

I wanted to be an electrical engineer so I could design stereo equipment, then I wanted to be an automotive engineer so I could design cars. Some how that turned into a degree in finance and selling financial instruments for a decade or so. Personally, I want my son to follow in my wife’s foot steps, she made much better decisions.

PJ, I think the same thing about my wife. She’s much more focused than myself. How is it that we guys seem more prone to blooming later in life than our wives? Hmmm, that would be an interesting article too.
I so agree with this: everyone needs to have something at which they try their best.
Some of us know who we are and we fight it. When we are many things, it can be harder, and also, wonderful.
Happy holidays to you and your family, Keith.

Loved the movie…and the snapshots of his writing. Children often astound me with their creativity and smarts.
When I was growing up I wanted to be a doctor, a teacher, a writer, a nurse, an actress, a midwife, etc. Medicine was clearly at the top of my list. In the end, I went into counseling – then PR – now writing/parenting. Maybe someday I’ll pursue my doctorate. For now, I’m content right where I am.

Stephanie. I’m sure he’d thank you for the compliment. He is especially creative compared to his brother (all brawn), and that’s something I’ve admired about him.
