My boyfriend is white I'm mexican-american, we argue a lot, our thoughts are very different and I'm close to my family as he confides with his friends. I as well am light skinned (ancestor spanish and israel), some of friends who are latin were mean to me cause my skin color. I enjoyed a lot this blog cause I can relate towards it and my boyfriend as well. :)

Regardless of how "westernized" a family may seem, there are cultural differences that inevitably creep into the picture.

I too am 1/2 of a interacial partnership and although my wife's family has been here for her lifetime and mine has been in Canada for 3 generations, there are some distinct "cultural" differences between us and at times has significant berring on how our children are raised and are turning out. Most good, some bad.

To say that a family that has different racial/cultural backgrounds is not multicultural comes from not knowing or experiencing it first hand.

Thank you Monica! It's nice to meet you. It's my philosophy that ethnicity has no bearing on culture. The fact that you and I are mixed heritage just goes to show that our cultures are what really matters. We share some similarities and some differences but we share mutual respect for who we are and how we're raising kids. Thanks again for the friendly and gracious comment.

Esteban,

You don't live here and I frankly don't really care that you don't think we're up to your standards of multi-culturalism.

I can see your couple being multicultural (for example, Mixtecs are different to other Mexicans in that we keep track of our bloodline, such as third-cousins, etc., in order to prevent intermarriage), but I don't see any examples of your kids being multi-cultural themselves. Celebrating Three-Kings Day is a big exception, though.

What a nice multi cultural family :)

My son was born in Japan and I also like to practice the "when in Rome" trick, but I find myself being very Ecuadorian no matter what.

It seems that Mely comes from a traditional family. I know many in Latin America but it's getting less common now. Personally I've always found this kind of families fascinating and would love to be closer to my relatives.

Of course, I consider my cousins cousins, not neighbors ;)

Speaking about racial background, I'm also a total mix of races, colors and cultures as most people in Latin America.

Nice to meet your family!
