Turkey Frying Accidents, How to do it Right and Fire Extinguishers
By: Keith

I‘ve seen a turkey being fried before. To be honest it doesn’t look that hard. But, there are always people who, for whatever reason, think they don’t need to follow proper procedure (usually alcohol is involved). Thanksgiving is right around the corner so I figured I’d do my part and compile a a few turkey frying videos along with one on how to actually do it right and some more videos about fire safety.
Indecision: Not sure how to put it out. They should have a fire extinguisher nearby. Dumb dumbs.
Sideways non-accident: Not an accident but still an interesting look into drunken stupidity.

How To Do it Right: A well made video on how to properly fry a turkey.
Extinguish a Grease Fire (no water)
Dry Chemical Fire Extinguisher
A class ABC fire extinguisher will put out just about every fire except hot metal fires (but you aren’t a mad scientist so I don’t think that should matter). The only problem with them is that they make a terrible mess. Luckily for you though you aren’t frying a turkey inside your house – right?
Class K Fire Extinguisher
The class K fire extinguisher is the outright best for grease fires. But, most of us don’t have them lying around the house as they are primarily used in commercial kitchens. Nevertheless, if you have one then you should have no worries about your house burning down.

That’s some scary stuff! People and fire are not a good combination and we’re sure to hear of the disasters on the nightly news in a few more days. It sounds yummy but not worth the risk.
Yeah, people have a weird ability to make a simple procedure into a life threatening event!
By the way, the spatchcocking came out great last night!
I have fried many turkeys. Because of the cost of the oil and its reltively short shelf life onceits been used, I tend to do 2-3 each time I set up the equipment and I set everything up 2-3 times from Thanksgiving to New Years. That’s a lot of turkey. I freeze what I don’t use right away and we have turkey sandwiches year ’round.
It’s quite easy and tons of fun. I recommend geting the kids involved with the prep work, set up, and cleanup. Limited involvment in the cooking process depending on age and responsibility. Oil is hot and it is dangerous.
The biggest problem is lowering the turkey into the pot. Pat the turkey as dry as possible, but know that the oil will spit and spatter and bubble up. DO IT SLOWLY! Wear long pants, long sleeves, and gloves to protect yourself. Keep the kids back. Have a fire extinguisher ready.
If done with proper concern for safety and with caution, it can be a fun family event, just like a BBQ. But safety must come first and always be kept in mind.
One last piece of advice. Buy a turkey frying kit that contains everything from the pot to the burner. Don’t try to assemble one from various things lying around the house. A proper kit designed for frying greatly increases safety and enjoyment.
Wow I can’t believe this stuff happens. Frozen turkey + hot oil = Great Youtube video!
