[...] Alan (my youngest) thinks Master Chief, from the game Halo, is about the coolest character ever. He pretends he’s Master Chief, he wants to wear armor like Master Chief, and he even tries to talk like Master Chief. Neil, my older boy who’s 7, admires Samus Aran. Samus is another video game character who wears armor, carries a big gun, and fights baddies. Samus, though, is one of the only big heroic video game characters who is a woman. Her video game history is long and dates all the way back to the original NES. Since then (and the surprise ending where we found out she’s a she) everybody has known she’s a woman, and she has appeared a number of times in her zero suit (which is her outfit when she doesn’t have on her armor) just to erase all doubt. Taken over time, Samus is bigger than just about every other video game character save Link and Mario (and maybe Sonic). She not only cracked the video game glass ceiling, but she’s the boss (or at least the Senior VP). And Neil has decided that she’s his favorite character. He even wanted to dress in the Varia Suit (armor) for Halloween. [...]

[...] Halloween is behind us. It’s time for another of my favorite holidays, Thanksgiving. The greatest thing about Thanksgiving is that it is the least commercialized of all the major holidays. It’s a time for family to get together, partake in simple pleasures, and give thanks for their lives. Yes, stores are selling Thanksgiving decorations, but it is not nearly as pervasive as what we see for Christmas, Halloween, or Easter. I bought a few simple decorations years ago, and that was it. The puritanical roots of our modern idea of Thanksgiving has no doubt precluded, to some extent, our tolerance for large corporate meddling. After all, I doubt the Wampanoag Indians would have had plastic turkeys wearing pilgrim hats festooning their long houses. Likewise, my European descendent’s were probably way too concerned about surviving to consider which scent was appropriate for their holiday candles. No, Thanksgiving was, and should always remain, a time for the simple things, not ill considered corporate cheesiness. There are exactly three things that make Thanksgiving special: family, food and cultural history.
They're so cute at that age. One year my boys went out as a Big Mac and Fries. (Yep, one was a burger, the other was fries. The fries costume was much easier!)

Mr. Potato Head? Before and after his Rachel Zoe makeover?

It's always fun to be someone for at least a little while. I used to rent costumes as an adult and always regreted not saying I lost the Jean Harlow dress. I would have been happy to pay for it because not long after the place caught fire and that beautiful gown was forever lost.
