Birthdays: Just Not the Same Anymore
By: Keith
Today is my Birthday, Flag Day. What am I going to do? Well, not much apart from write this blog-post and perhaps go for a walk. Presents? Maybe something small. Party? No. It’s going to be a few well meaning happy birthdays, a hug from the kids and a nice dinner. Pretty nondescript actually. It’s a regular day except for a few pleasantries and the knowledge that I’m 36 instead of 35. I couldn’t be happier. I don’t like parties and I don’t see the point of wasting lots of money on presents or spending too much energy for something that really only matters to me and a few other close friends and family. Besides, I’ve had 35 of these, and they’ve gotten progressively less important since I peaked back at age 11 or so. At 36 all I really care about are my kids’ birthdays. The excitement of another year gone is powerful when we’re young, but becomes forgettable as we age (excepting when we make 100). I like receiving happy birthday wishes. That’s all I need.
7 things to do on My Birthday, Realistically:
1. Play Call of Duty: But I’m terrible at it so that might not be pleasant.
2. Eat a Big Cake: I worked out already today so I can afford it.
3. Go for a Walk with the Family: I’ll probably have to drag the kids.
4. Plug in my Phone so I can receive calls from Family: My phone is out of juice. People are going to think I’m avoiding them.
5. Guilt my Wife into Making me a Nice Dinner: I’m thinking a big steak would be nice.
6. Not Argue with People on the Internet: It would be nice to take a day off from being a know-it-all jerk.
7. Sleep: Nah, that’s probably not going to happen. Who am I kidding?
Things I’d like to be Doing but Won’t:
1. Take a big International Trip: I’d love to fly first class to some exotic place.
2. Not have to yell at the kids for a whole 24 Hours: Not a day goes by…
3. Sleep
As I age I desire fewer things. Kids want toys, lots of toys. I want good food and a little peace. What happened along the way that my expectations have dropped so much?

All of your birthdays have been duplicates but I had the good fortune of experiencing the original and it brings me wonderful memories and a lifetime of granted dreams! It will ALWAYS be special to me.
Happy Birthday; you’re actually one whole day younger than me (I turned 36 yesterday).
I spent it laying low and chilling with my family. I didn’t even play Call of Duty.

Hey SciFiDad: I didn’t know your birthday was yesterday. Happy birthday to you too!
Is that FRUIT on your cake?
Birthday celebrations definitely don’t have the appeal they used to have for me either. I’m happy with a night off from cooking and maybe a slice of cake, but no singing, especially by a gaggle of restaurant employees. No matter what you do, I hope you have a nice birthday.

Happy Birthday!! Don’t worry, I like quiet birthdays now as well. Life is good. Have a great day!!
Happy belated! It was my son’s birthday yesterday as well, but I didn’t realize it was Flag Day. Does that make me a bad parent or a bad patriot?

Felicidades Keith, no sabía de tu cumpleaños por eso no te había felicitado. Que cumplas muchos más al lado de tu familia y que Dios los bendiga.
