A Charlie Brown Christmas is Saved! – ABC Averts Programming Disaster

There are certain Christmas programming rituals that we’ve come to love in the United States.  It’s A Wonderful Life, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Holiday Inn, Frosty the Snowman, Christmas Vacation and Miracle on 34th Street are all shows that we expect to see every year.  Among the most revered of the Christmas shows is A Charlie Brown Christmas.  It’s about the true meaning of Christmas, represented by a pathetic little Christmas tree.  I look forward to seeing Charlie Brown around Christmas, Halloween and Thanksgiving.  Those cartoons are a part of us all I think.  Now, I’m not a huge fan of politics, but I respect that the president, on occasion, has stuff he wants to tell us.  I don’t besmirch the man for updating us everyday citizens on things that should probably matter to us.  That being said, I would have seen it as a cultural downer if the President’s speech had permanently bumped A Charlie Brown Christmas from ABC’s programming, which it very nearly did.

Lucky for all of us that President Obama gave a good speech and that Charlie Brown has been reprogrammed for next week.  Originally, ABC had simply axed it from the schedule as it was set to run right in the middle of the speech.  So I guess we can all be thankful for two things.  Firstly, that we get to see A Charlie Brown Christmas.  Secondly, that the president got to say what he wanted to say – as presidents should be able to do.  Crisis averted.

A Charlie Brown Christmas:

I own the Charlie Brown Holiday Collection which I make my boys watch every year (father’s can do that sort of thing).  The collection consists of It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving and A Charlie Brown Christmas.  They are funny, wholesome and meaningful.  They are the sorts of shows I can watch repeatedly and always learn something from.  The Christmas tree theme in A Charlie Brown Christmas is one I can especially relate to since there have been times that I have been unable to afford a proper tree.  The years I decorated a branch instead of a tree were no less festive than these more recent years when I’ve been able to afford more.  Charlie Brown’s pathetic little tree teaches us the lessons of gratitude and of appreciation for the sublime better than any highly budgeted Hollywood spectacular ever could.  The utter simplicity of Charlie Brown is something most of us can, or should, connect with.  While the Afghanistan war is important in terms of its immediacy, Charlie Brown is no less important for what he does for our national consciousness in the long run.

Ours is the top 6 feet of a Douglas fir from 2006. The needles are gone and we have it on the front porch during the Chrismas season.

In the daytime it’s hard to see but at night with its 275 multi colored lights on it, it is BEAUTIFUL.

During the rest of the year we keep it behind the house where it gathers strength for the next Christmas.
