Autism: Can it be Reversed?

By: Keith

Let me begin this by simply saying I find the following two movies interesting for the fact that they are personal stories of autism from people who, instead of accepting a diagnosis, have publicly asked uncommon questions about a disease that is still misunderstood by professionals who admit they don’t have all the answers yet who oftentimes ridicule families who think outside the box.  I don’t agree or disagree with any opinion, medically licensed or not.  My opinion is that I admire people who refuse to give up and who seek knowledge.  That’s it.

Beautiful Son:

The first trailer is for Beautiful Son.  It’s about a family from Hawaii whose son was born seemingly normal but after a time started displaying clear signs of Autism.  They believe that environmental factors have contributed to his decline, and they’ve embarked on a campaign to try to reverse it, believing they can heal his affliction.  I’m all for it!  Watch the trailer and decide for yourself if the family is crazy.  I don’t think they are.  Is mercury contamination partly to blame?  That’s the question.  I’d like to know, too.  And thank you to Denise Mollison for bringing this story to my attention.

Graham’s Story:

The second autism related trailer comes to me from a blogging friend of mine, John Cave Osborn, who found this clip about a kid named Graham who was diagnosed with Autism, but his parents think it might actually be something else.   His symptoms sometimes look like autism and sometimes he looks completely normal and there are no symptoms at all.  The big question here concerns the accuracy of diagnosis.  Are doctors diagnosing autism like you’d sort 6 varieties of candies into only 4 buckets?  Have the doctors done due diligence with Graham or have they labeled him simply because insurance documentation demands it?

Like I said, decide for yourselves.  I don’t like to dismiss anything out of hand, and it would be nice if these people found answers.  They’ve been forced to take their stories to the public because the medical community has in one way or another failed them.

Thanks for posting. I am going to check out both of these stories. It is really hard when you don’t have the answers. As a parent, you just want to love your child and that means doing what is best for them. Unfortunately, when you don’t have these answers, it is hard to know what the best for them is. I believe that early intervention helped my son tremendously and would suggest this for any parent that feels that their child needs extra help. The people that have all worked with my son have all pointed out to me that the most important thing is the intervention in the areas needed, not so much the diagnosis. We had him diagnosed because we felt we needed to know and i think it has helped with providing services for him in the school system.
I have started to read one of Stanley Greenspan’s books mentioned in the second video. As soon as I started reading it, I immediately felt it made sense to me.
    Thanks again for posting. Misty

After searching for years, my son who is 8 and has an asd diagnosis has just had a confirmed PANDAS diagnosis. We ONLY found out because we paid $400 to have the test done through Dr. Cunningham’s lab in Oklahoma. Now maybe we can get him the treatment he deserves. He was diagnosed with: ocd, adhd, tourette’s, autism and odd. All those symptoms can come from PANDAS. I completely understand your frustration and pray that your son get better. However, mercury is definetly not the only thing that could be making our children sick. They may have virus issues, bacteria (like the strep bacteria in PANDAS) or many, many other things. The NNY Autism Clinic is a good place to investigate or search on yahoo for the NIDS group. (Neuroimmune Dysfunction syndrome) NIDS is headed by Dr. Michael Goldberg and there is also Dr. Bruce Russell who works in Texas and NY at the NNY Autism Clinic. God bless.

I’ve worked with a boy with autism and his behavior and symptoms were controlled by the foods he ate. (just as Jenny McCarthy’s son experienced/experiences). Having been through training and doing a ton of my own research my experience was that the mother of the son I taught was also mildly autistic. (she shared this with me, but she was a firm believer the MMR cause her son’s autistm).
If this is something caused by vaccines why are some so drastically changed by it? How is it that foods eaten can change the behavior or exacerbate it? Aslo, why is it that mostly males are affected? If I were a parent of a child with this condition I would be extremely frustrated with the medical industry. They do not have the answers nor would I trust them to find one. My heart goes out to these parents. I hope they find what works for their children.

I am the mother to a 6 year girl who was diagnosed with Autism. Through intense therapy, diet changes and YES….NO MORE VACCINES or EAR DROPS containing mercury in our house, and some behavior changes I don’t think she would be called Autistic by the general population. She does however struggle still with OCD, rocking, and SPD. I wonder too why there are no concrete answers. Yes it can be hard but to say that these kids do or do not have autism just by watching a short movie stuns me. There are many behaviors that are on the Autism Spectrum that a child or adult can have and not be autistic. It saddens me that as a society more money is not POURED into finding out why the rise in autism. As for me we KNOW mercury in vaccines and ear drops caused her problems. I have no doubts at all, I lived it and saw it happen right before our eyes. I can also feel for the family that believes their son does not have autism. The mere sound of the word sends panic to any parent, but he does seem to have attributes on the spectrum, my guess is SPD but it is hard to diagnose from the films. just my thoughts and of course LOVE these kids and see if you can help the family. That might be the best help they have right now!!

Dr. Mark Hyman is a doctor with a different way of looking at how the body works. He writes about autism here: http://drhyman.com/why-current-thinking-about-autism-is-completely-wrong-470/ and about mercury toxicity here: http://drhyman.com/how-to-rid-your-body-of-mercury-and-other-heavy-metals-a-3-step-plan-to-recover-your-health-523/ . Food for thought….

My wife and I happen to think autism can be reversed. Maybe not in all cases, but we’ve had lot’s of little successes all along that have added up to a huge success. Ironically your comment plug-in is showing my last post, it’s actually my wifes but on the same site. Normally I elect for the link not to be posted, but in the spirit of this article I’m going to let it slip through.
It’s funny, our son’s school which has provided fantastic services, has recently elected to change our son’s autism diagnosis and drop services. Normally we would be jumping for joy knowing he “isn’t” autistic anymore. But we and his therapist are having to fight to keep the diagnosis because when he is not in the public eye… his behaviors are different, we know he has a ways to go. But when it’s all said and done, we believe our child will have a normal life ahead of him. He might be a bit odd to others at times, but many of our great minds (and his is not exception) are anyway :)
Thank you for your article, and spreading autism awareness.
    Cheers, Lee

I always ask myself, did I do this to my son? What if I had stopped all immunizations till he was 3-4? I wish I had a time machine..Damn me..I had don thousand of other immunizations on other kids, not even one case had come bad but just this one. My own son, my only son. I have thrown all the vaccines to trash can and I don’t practice shots anymore.
