The Cozy Coupe: 30 Years OldEl Cozy Coupe: Cumple 30 años

Did you know the Cozy Coupe car from Little Tykes is 30 years old this year?  I, quite honestly, didn’t even know they still sold it.  I never had one when I was a kid and I don’t remember ever being in one or being interested in getting one.  But I must be the exception because they’re ridiculously popular.  I read in this month’s Mental Floss magazine that 457,000 of these things were sold last year.  That’s 20,000 more units than the Toyota Camry, making it the number one selling car in North America in 2009. It’s all great that this little Flintstones car continues to sell so well, but what I find a little weird is that it’s something of a cult phenomenon.  There are clubs that actually spend time and resources modifying them.  I read in Mental Floss that there is someone who put an LCD screen in his!  It’s not that I’m against improving on production model cars, but it’s a little silly to modify a plastic car that is going to be used by a kid and probably get turned upside down and left in the rain.  But, there you have it; people will be people.  I found a few pictures of modifications people have made to their Cozy Coupes.  I gotta say they’re pretty creative.  I couldn’t find that one with the LCD though.  I wonder if that person is to ashamed of himself (I think only a guy would do that) to post pictures.

It isn’t just the Cozy Coupe that gets the treatment.  Those little electric motorized kid cars seem to be popular too.  Why?  Why are people compelled to spend time modifying kids toys? My theory is that people really want their kids to be unique and special, despite the obvious reality that they aren’t, so they go through all this effort to make sure their kid is the “coolest”.  Of course the kid doesn’t give a damn.  All the kid wants is a little car to push around.  He doesn’t care if he’s one of 457,000 other kids pushing the same car around.  It’s fun.  Only the parents seem to be so insecure as to go through the effort to really stand out.  Might as well get the kid a tattoo while they’re at it.

i like the monster one! i have to say that, though I’d never modify one, those cars are pretty cool. we’ve had one since Ryan was little and I can say that it gets played with EVERY time we’re outside.. no exceptions.. it’s the first or second thing out of the garage every time. I’d say that all the kids like it just as much! it’s equally entertaining for 1 year olds as it is for 3 and 5 year olds.. though the 5 year olds are a little more creative in their uses for it.. run.. jump.. land belly first on the top of the roof and roll as far as possible.. or the wheels go all whacky and ya end up on your head (we wear helmets when we’re playing with anything on wheels.. for good reason) … just as fun! :)

Tammy: I can imagine your kids going crazy with one of these things. Helmets are a good thing!

HAHAHA! I could see the appeal: You can’t afford a classic car, so you modify a Classic Coupe! I like the Geek Squad version…
We don’t own a Coupe yet, but I’m pretty sure my kids would want to personlize it like they do their other stuff!

Good point, Justine! I guess if I was really into improving something around the house, and i didn’t have much money… Hey! Why not the kid’s Cozy Coupe? :-)

Excellent keith, took me back to when I bought a cozy coup for my kids, took endless days of punishment and kept them quiet and entertained for hours. Outlasted their childhoood and never broke, although slightly faded. Eventualy ended up being given away a few years ago..

Dave: I had always considered the Cozy Coupe an old fashioned sort of thing. I didn’t even know they were still making them, which is a bummer because I totally would have gotten one for my kids if I had known :-) Funny thing is that my sister bought one for her kids and even told me all about it years ago, yet I somehow didn’t process the information. HA Anyway, thanks for commenting and visiting!
