School Bus Safety: Yeah Right

There are three different kinds of safety advice.  There’s advice that is insightful and contains useful information that makes our lives better.  That’s the only helpful kind.  The other two are stupid – advice that everybody knows and does anyway and advice that is obvious and nobody ever follows even though it’s obvious.  In that category we have helmet related advice, running with knives advice and advice related to eating an upside down food pyramid.  Today I picked up a free local newspaper from one of those plastic containers that say FREE on them that is next to the real newspapers at the bus stop.  It’s mostly advertisements, but it did have a pretty funny article in it about school bus safety.  Here are their helpful tips:

1. Kids should get to the bus stop 5 minutes early.  I don’t know about you but running after the bus was something I used to do regularly.  If anything it made me faster.

2. Stand three steps away from the curb as the bus pulls up.  If kids don’t know not to stand in front of a moving bus then maybe they’re riding the wrong kind of bus.

3. Wait for the bus to stop before getting on.  Does anybody know of a school bus that drives with the door open?  I’ve never seen it.

4. Use the handrails.  Seriously?  Do school buses even have handrails?

5. Never walk behind the bus.  Did they mean run because how else are you going to catch it when you get to the bus stop late?

6. For Parents – slow down in school zones.  If you don’t slow down in school zones is this advice going to make the difference?

7. If you have to cross the street don’t run in front of the bus.  Yes, and don’t take a bath with a toaster either.  Thanks.

There wasn’t that helpful?

  1. You forgot one…..
Firearms Prohibited I’m not making this up I sawthus in the window of a school bus in St Louis city which is for the most part very Urban like….

  2. STLDaddy: Wow! That’s one I’ve never seen before. Sorta makes all these “suggestions” seem suddenly much more useless than I already thought they were! :-)
