Medieval Times: Good Family Fun

By: Keith

Do you like horses, knights, damsels in distress and fighting?  I can say for sure that most kids love those things (perhaps even the damsel in distress part), and my kids are no exception.  We’re on vacation now; you probably know that from reading my past posts this week.  Last night the whole family went to Medieval Times here in Buena Park California.  It was the first time I’ve been, and I didn’t know what to expect.   Let me just say, it was super cool.  I can’t imagine a kid who wouldn’t get a blast out of it too.  Here’s the rundown.

Crowns and Teams:

The first thing you get upon arrival is a colored crown and a table number.  We got green, and that means we sit with all the other green crowned people and root for the Green Knight.  There are other knights, Red and Yellow, Black and White, Yellow, Blue, and Red.  The idea is simple, you sit at your table, and the serving wenches give you half a chicken and other tasty food while you root for your knight and boo all the other knights.  Our green crowd was the enemy of the castle because our green knight was the bad guy.  Thus the green crowd booed the loudest and cheered the loudest.  Our green knight was cool; it’s too bad he had to lose at the end (I think the bad guy should have won).

Food:

Like I said, the serving wenches bring out a 5 course meal as you watch the festivities and you eat it all with your hands.  Not to worry though because they give you plenty of wet naps.  The half a chicken was way too much food for the kids, but it was fun to watch them try, getting messy, anyway.  The food starts coming as soon as the games begin and doesn’t stop until right before the final act (where the green knight met his end).

Meant for Little Boys:

The boys, unable to actually cheer because of their sensory overload, were totally emerged in the spectacle.  Alan barely ate his meal because he couldn’t take his eyes off of the horses.  When the knights fought, sparks flew everywhere (must coat the swords with something to make that happen) and spooky, heroic music blared throughout the stadium to get the audience pumped up.  The knights themselves are fantastic actors.  Our green knight was convincingly bad, but he played to our green section masterfully; we instinctively cheered whenever he rode by.   Two hours of fighting knights on horses equalls permanent looking grins on two young boys.

I didn’t get very many good pictures because my hands were all greasy and I kept forgetting to take pictures at the pinnacle moments.  Suffice to say that the money was well worth the experience (Tickets were $55 each, but we paid half price through some special deal).  There were drunken frat boys, kids at birthday parties, wedding parties, some lady who was with a massive group celebrating her divorce.  It was truly an everyman experience.

Wow– sounds like fun! I remember we had a Medieval Times in Dallas, but sadly, I’ve never been!

If I am ever anywhere near a Medieval Times with my son, I don’t care what kind of schedule we on, we’re going in!

I remember going to a Medieval Times on a family trip to Florida one year, it was indeed quite fun. I wonder if there is one near here? If not there is always the Renaissance Festival in the fall.

My son has been twice and loved it both times. Unfortunately he went with camp so I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing it in person, but I plan on rectifying that some time soon. It sounds great.
