Guns N’ Roses is Classic Rock!?
By: Keith
Welcome to the Jungle came on the radio yesterday. I was drumming along with it on my steering wheel when I came to the sudden realization that I was listening to the classic rock station. Not an 80′s rock station — classic rock as in The Doors! I don’t need any more reminders of my age, I really don’t. Remember in high school when you could flip around the dial and find an oldies station? I’m talking Sam Cooke oldies. Not that Sam Cooke is my age or anything, but you could still find those stations.
Speaking of, there are some things that shouldn’t be messed with. Amy Winehouse should have left that one alone.
Welcome to the Jungle is one of those songs that I consider part of my youth. But how long is it going to take for some jackass to come try to cover it? Oh, I know Guns N’ Roses covered a little song called Live and Let Die, and I still think it’s an awesome rendition. Doing a cover is a recognition of past greatness, no doubt, but it is a reminder that the past is past. And that’s a little sad. There are whole stations dedicated to 80′s pop music. But how did Guns N’ Roses get mixed up with Pink Floyd, and the Rolling Stones? All great, Yes. But are they all classic rock? Maybe. That’s another issue I have. We don’t have a station that plays Dio. Killswitch did a pretty great cover of Holy Diver by the way.
What Will be Classic in 20 Years?
There are so many songs that can’t be found anymore (or not easily). I miss the oldies station even though those songs are before my time. We live in a youth driven society that discards the old stuff before it’s even dried off (in my opinion). I enjoy some of today’s music (can’t stand Lady Gaga though); this song makes me laugh every time.
Just makes me feel better to listen to it even though I don’t understand a word (notice the footloose intro?). It has a very oldies type feel. Happy music. I don’t know what’s going to be popular enough to survive onto classic rock or classic pop radio in 20 or 25 years. T-Pain? God, I hope not. If you use auto-tune you’re automatically disqualified. My idea of a classic pop song?
This has been an interesting ramble. Thanks for listening!

If there is any justice in this world, then classic rock stations will all fold before what passes for music in this day and age becomes considered “classic”. And, yes, I’m talking to you Lady Gaga.

PJ: Lady Gaga should never be more than a musical oddity. It’s noise that goes boom boom boom but there’s no real music there. Maybe theater, but not music.
I’ll stick proudly to the old stuff! There is so little quality being produced these days in all areas that I have to wonder if anything will make it into antique stores let alone “classic” rock stations.
Mom: Another good point. What things would we see in the antique stores in 60,70 years? My printer? hmmmm, doesn’t seem too exciting to me.
Land down under!!! Woo-hoo! Now your talkin!! I could listen to that song all day.

Pretty funny. And I shudder to think what will be “classic” 20 years from now.
