Glow in the Dark Stuff is Fun

I‘m sure whoever invented glow in the dark technology envisioned a world of safety and utility.  Like glow sticks!  However apart from glow sticks (and even they make great toys) it seems that making things glow in the dark is more fun than useful.  Neil earned some money last week taking care of the neighbors’ dogs.  I asked him “What do you want to spend your money on?” and he said “I want sticky hands!”  We went looking for sticky hands.  He was excited when he found he could buy a dozen regular sticky hands for 5 dollars.  However, he was even more thrilled when he saw the same sticky hands available in glow in the dark.   He didn’t care that they were twice the price – dangit, he wanted his glow in the dark sticky hands.  “But, why?” I asked.  “Why would you play with them at night when you can’t see?”  I should have known.  “I’m not going to play with them at night.  I’m going to play with them in the closet!”  Hmmm, that makes sense.  Anyway, we’ve established that everything is better if it glows in the dark.  Here are some other things that glow in the dark:

Glow Sticks: Better to send your kid out at night with a glow stick than a glow in the dark pig.

Celestial ceiling decorations

Goo: Who doesn’t love glow in the dark simulated boogers?

Shoes

Hair Gel: Weird but sorta cool

Pigs: Scientists

Plants: Okay, okay, so some plants do it naturally.  Show offs.

Thread

Fingernail Polish

Toilet Paper: For when the light in the bathroom burns out?  Camping?

Scorpions: Yes, scorpions glow in the dark when exposed to black light.

Minerals: Willemite, Calcite, Benitoite, Scheelite, Adamite, Fluorite, Sodalite, Hardystonite, Gypsum, Scapolite, and Zippeite are all fluorescent.

Golf balls

There you go.  The list can obviously go on forever.  The lesson is that everything can glow in the dark if you want it to badly enough.

I suppose you could always hunt for scorpions outside, stick them to a costume– and then you’d have a glow in the dark Halloween costume that’s unique!

My friend decorated her son’s ceiling with glow in the dark paint! Stats and planets and a little heart hidden, it was really neat! Especially since during the day you couldn’t see it. Then at night it was gorgeous!!!

Glow in the dark stuff is cool. My nephew used to have a toy lightsaber that glowed and he and I played with it for the longest time. I’d like to find one for my little boy now, but I’m afraid he’d attack the rest of the family and send us all to the ER with real lightsaber wounds.

Anyone who doesn’t enjoy glowing in the dark should have his/her head examined. Seriously.
