Glade Candles, Kids’ Holiday Glasses and My 200th Post

DSC03578I bought 4 Glade scented holiday candles the other day at Target.  Yeah, I’m a 35 year old guy, and I like candles.  These little things last a few days and make my house smell nice.  There is, however, one detail about them that I don’t like.  The directions on the bottom say to discard them after use.  I think that’s total waste of a cute little glass and, frankly, resources in general.  Unlike bulkier and less convenient candle containers, these are the perfect size and shape for kid hands. DSC03571They are decorated for the season, and they aren’t cheap plastic.  I cleaned it by setting it in a few inches of almost boiling water until the small bit of remaining wax was melted and slid right out.  Then I scrubbed it with a bit of Bar Keeper’s Friend.  When all was said and done I have (1) 7 ounce Christmas glass that my kids think is made just for them.  So, for $2.99 each you can have a nice smelling candle and a neat kid sized glass.  Bonus! When I’m done burning the other three I’ll have an entire set.  Cool!

The other thing is that I wrote my 200th post two days ago!  This blog has been up and running since May 26th of this year.  That makes 191 days and 200 posts!  We’ve come a long way since then, too.  I remember having just 15 visitors a day for the first two months and just about giving up.  Persistence pays though and I’m doing much better now (see recent stats here).  So, thanks to everyone who’s been visiting and commenting, all the new visitors I’m getting, even the people who think I’m a total fraud and those who hate me.  You all make it worth while!

  1. It reminds me of the jelly glasses and the dishes that came in the soap box. It seems that we get a whole lot less for more these days. Little glasses are often just the right size and far be it from you to follow instructions. Congrats on your continuing growth! :-)

  2. Congrats!! That is a really cool idea regarding the candles. I bet there are dome other ways to reuse those for the holidays too. If you put a little bit of candy in them and then wrap them in cellophane tied with a bow, you could have the kids give them out as a small gift to friends or a teacher. I am sooo not creative, but you got me thinking.

  3. Yay Keith!! You’re turning into frugal Angie. But….did you use a coupon for the candles? Hehe!! I’m going to have to check out these candles/glasses at Target. Love that place.

CONGRATS on the success of your blog. You rock, and you know it! :)

  4. The candles are a great idea! And 200 posts – congrats. AWESOME.

  5. Angie, I am trying to be more frugal. Of course, I’ll never be as good as you though :-)

  6. Thanks, BigLittleWolf! It’s been a lot of hard work — as you know

  7. Mom, indeed, Have you noticed since the cost of milk has gone up that ice cream half gallon boxes aren’t a half gallon anymore? More for less, like you say.

  8. Thanks, Misty. I have to admit that I’m not very creative with these things. I’m sure you’re better than me. But, I just couldn’t let such cute little glasses go to waste. It just seemed wrong! :-)
