Bits of Randomness

By: Keith

I have a folder on my desktop where I save random bits of information that I hope someday to make into blog posts.  Unfortunately a lot of those bits are just that, bits; they don’t constitute whole articles.  Today I think I’ll compile a few of the more recent and interesting ones that I’ve found.

Recognize drowning:

An old friend sent me a link yesterday about how to recognize drowning.  She lives in Hawaii so this is information especially relevant to her (she has two young daughters).  But, even though you and I don’t live in Hawaii (unless you do) we still have swimming pools and lakes.  Thus, we should all know how to recognize drowning.  A drowning person does not flail around in the water to let everybody know he’s drowning like the scenes we see in the movies.  In fact, it’s easy to miss it if you don’t know what to look for. Go to the article to read the whole story (because it’s educational and you need to know) but, for a brief primer, these are the true signs of drowning:

- Head low in the water, mouth at water level

- Head tilted back with mouth open

- Eyes glassy and empty, unable to focus

- Eyes closed

- Hair over forehead or eyes

- Not using legs – Vertical

- Hyperventilating or gasping

- Trying to swim in a particular direction but not making headway

- Trying to roll over on the back

- Ladder climb, rarely out of the water

Mad Science Experiments

I own Theo Gray’s book of Mad science Experiments you can do at Home but Probably Shouldn’t.  These are truly experiments that only a trained mad scientist should attempt.  7 of them are listed here.

Garden in a Bag

A friend of mine got me a Garden.in.a.bag.  He brought it back from some business meeting he had at Yahoo.  I haven’t tried it yet, but the instructions sound easy, and I’ll have petunias growing in this bag in a week!  Here’s the link to all the available species.

Arithmaroo

I got an iPod touch a few weeks ago, and for a while I didn’t know what to do with it.  Games for the kids: that’s what to do with it!  The Arithmaroo game is a little beneath my boys at this point, but it’s still really cool.  I also got them a simple math facts game (addition, subtraction, etc…), of which there are many available and which are pretty much all good.  But, I think little kids would enjoy Arithmaroo (I secretly use it as a pastime).

Preggie Pops:

Rarely do I come across an item so stupid that I feel compelled to write about how dumb I think it is.  Preggie Pops is such a product.  I am not going to give them a link (although I will try to outrank them on their own name), because doing so might cause someone to waste their money on them.  No, I’m not a pregnant lady, but I have known many pregnant women (only one of whom I was responsible for impregnating), and I know enough to say that morning sickness presents itself uniquely in every women.  Women who get it find their own remedies to cope.  If you want to spend 5 dollars on 7 lollypops, I guess that’s your business, but you’ll probably go through a box in a day (because morning sickness doesn’t happen just in the morning).  I suggest a giant bag of Dum-Dums for 3 dollars from Wal-Mart.
