Don’t Get Sick!

Â
I got sick yesterday. I’m still sick. It’s awful. All I want to do is crawl into a hole and sleep. Unfortunately I can’t do that very easily. I have things to do and kids to care for. But, compared to other people who have to work, I’m lucky. Other people have to actually go out of the house to work. My wife works from home, and she’s here to help if things go wrong. I recognize how lucky that makes me. When I started getting ill yesterday, my wife stepped in and fed the boys dinner and entertained them while I took a shower and got a bowl of tea. Yes, that makes me fortunate. People who are alone all day with their kids can’t afford to get sick. I, at least, have someone to fill in. Now, because she’s stepping up to take care of the kids, nobody is making any money; that stinks. And, to be perfectly honest about it, I’m a control freak when it comes to the kids anyway. I have to teach them their school work and take them to their sporting events. My wife doesn’t have as much experience with doing those things. So, in my mind, when I get sick, everything stops working and the wheels fall off; I happen to think that’s an accurate statement too. Maybe it’s just the narcissist in me that thinks nothing gets done right unless I do it.

How to not get Sick
Â
I followed all these pieces of advice and I got sick anyway. When it’s time to get sick, there is nothing to do but let it happen. That being said, it’s all a bunch of no brainer advice. Follow it anyway, and sickness will not come as often.
Â
1. Eat well
2. Sleep well
3. Exercise
4. Relax
Â
Really. What else is there to say? Eating well means eating the food groups and not stuffing your face with corn chips and salsa. Sleeping well means get enough sleep at night so that you aren’t tired in the morning. Duh. Moderate exercise is important to keep the immune system strong and to make your body strong enough to resist illnesses. And finally, drum roll please, relaxing means taking time during the day to de-stress, to sit with a bowl of tea and vegetate a little. Be away from screaming kids. Enlist the spouse’s support to make it happen – it’s important!
Â
This is the first big sickness I’ve had in about a year and a half. I think that’s pretty good considering I subject myself to snot nosed kids all day who refuse to wash their hands after wrestling in the park with the dirty kid down the street. The conclusion to all of this is that I’m lucky. I know it. Even with that support, it’s difficult to accept that I have to miss lessons, stay inside, and neglect my kids for a while until I get better. It’s a crummy feeling.

I think it’s the de-stress part that gets most parents. At least when I’m feeling “not quite myself” it’s usually due to me wearing down from lack of time away from the kids day in and day out. Unfortunately, for most people it tends to become a vicious cycle from there since they might have someone to step in.
Feel lucky and feel better!!!
Thanks, Angie. I’ve spent most of today in bed; only woke up to write this
It’s true that parents don’t take enough time to relax. It’s unfortunate that some spouses are not supportive enough to make it happen
Although Neil and Alan don’t go to public school, you guys have contact with other kids which will do you in every year. I do nothing to take care of my body and can’t remember the last time I was sick but have little contact with kids and maybe that is the difference. They are cute little carriers.
It’s true, Mom. Kids carry all sorts of weird bugs. I have a feeling I’d probably get sick anyway because I’m not very careful about germs in general. But, Being around kids all day certainly makes it hard to avoid.
Keith– get well and have some pho!

Ugh, I am sick and my husband is sick and he left this morning to go to work. Somehow our daughter seems to have gotten barely sick and gotten over it completely and is full of energy. I am making soup for us tonight

De-stress? Say what? Hmmm. Not in my dictionary. In any language! OK, one exception. Paris. But how often does a parent get to take off to Paris? OK, a second exception – exceptional tennis!!!
Kleenex, chicken soup, and the MEN’S US OPEN FINAL this afternoon!! Since you’re not well enough for your boys anyway, you might as well enjoy it, and guilt-free at that. Oh, by the way, I’m convinced that there are medicinal effects to yelling-and-screaming-and-cheering amazing athletes, whatever your physical condition.
Feel better!

Sorry to hear you got sick. Your advice is spot on – eat right, rest, relax. If you need a home remedy, try grapefruit tea (here’s a recipe: http://dadshouseblog.com/2008/12/11/old-home-remedies/ )
Be well!
