Free Math Worksheets: Solving the Resource Problem
   Â
You could go to the bookstore and buy a collection of addition and subtraction worksheets. Or you could visit DadsWorksheets.com and have access to 4,800 worksheets which cover every piece of basic math up to pre-algebra that you could ever want or need. I discovered DadsWorksheets a year ago during my quest for the best dad blogs. Since then I’ve been using his worksheets every other day on the boys to reinforce addition and subtraction facts. We’re one week away from embarking on multiplication, and DadsWorksheets is going to have me covered there too.  Â

The Importance of Math Facts:Â Â Â Â Â Â Â
   Â
The importance of having a firm grasp of numbers cannot be overstated. It’s the foundation of everything, and if you can’t say immediately what 15 – 8 is or the product of 12×15 then you’ll be in a world of hurt when it comes to understanding more advanced concepts. The fact is that even if you have the brainpower to do math, you’ll be stuck because of a lack of basic tools from which to draw in your manipulation of numbers. Thus, I would say that it’s more important to spend extra time memorizing and manipulating basic facts than it is to advance in subject material. Once the foundation is laid the rest is easy. That’s how math works. The numbers have to dance in your head, and that happens with mastery from the bottom up.  Â

Stay Sharp:Â Â Â
Â
Staying sharp is important for kids as well as parents. This is an exercise you and your kids can do together. It’s a mental exercise that should be done without writing out the addition, just the answers. Start by adding 11 to each number. So the first column would look like 12, 68, 24, 80, 36, 92, 48, etc… . Adding 11 is pretty easy, but every day increase that by one – 12, 13, 14 etc… . Soon both you and your kids will have strengthened your minds without putting in too much effort. Fun, right? Now try multiplying the numbers by 11,12,13,14 … 19 … 25 … and so forth.

Math is an excellent way to hone the mind but I worry in these days of calculators and cash registers just how capable most people are when these tools are taken away. I’ve witnessed pitiful results.
Mom: It’s unfortunate that there are so many people who rely on machines for such a crucial life skill. But, I also like to think that necessity is the mother of invention. Our ability to calculate has suffered thanks to technology, but perhaps our brains aren’t so far gone that we can’t learn again.
Eric: I was so grateful to discover it last year. That guy should be given a big round of applause.
Hmm– these rows and columns of numbers are too much to do in my head. Time for some practice!
Awesome site, I’ve definitely bookmarked this one so I can start working with the 4 year old in a more focused way. Thanks for passing along the reference.

Keith,
love your site! Great advice, I think I have been way to focus on getting my kids to be great readers that I forget to work on the math side of things. Downloading sheets now…you know what we’ll be doing a little extra of this week!

Thanks Fred: I did the same thing with my boys. We focused almost entirely on reading and I completely flaked out on Math. But, since we all started together it’s been fun for everybody. I really can’t give enough thanks to dadsworksheets on the matter. I wouldn’t be lost without him, but he really provided an excellent service.
