[...] Homeschooling my kids is one of the great pleasures I have in life. I get to be responsible for their mental growth and to shape them into productive citizens. My job description is this: Increase my kids’ chances in life through quality education and direction. It’s my responsibility to teach them everything they need to know to a point where they can take over for themselves, to the point where they become self motivated. That means homeschooling my kids requires more than an understanding of the material being taught (though that is also necessary). Homeschooled or not, kids need to become curious if they expect to have any success in life. Public school kids will see dozens of teachers in their school careers. There’s a high probability that at least one of those teachers will inspire them and spark their curiosity. Homeschoolers have one teacher, perhaps two. If you are not a curious parent you should not Homeschool because you won’t inspire your kids, and you’re kids will likely not be better served by a homeschooled education. [...]

Hey Keith…I very much like the post. We have seven children and have chosen to homeschool from the get go. Our eldest is 15 and our youngest is 2. We officially are home-schooling 5 at the moment.

It gives us a chance to focus in on what is truly important. Our goal is not to follow the failed methods of typical schooling but to teach them what it means to be able to live a full and abundant life here.

Sure…we have them do the math, sciences, literature, history etc…but we also focus in on things that will really make a difference in their lives…such as understanding the affection and love of a family and a loving God…and…learning how to do business and function in areas of life that are important.

For instance…my two eldest are putting together a cookbook of their original recipes right now and then they are going to package it and market it so that they can get a "taste" (lol) and feel for how to create, package, market & sell a product from start to finish.

Anyhow…thanks so much for sharing with us…blessings!

Thanks Susan and Stephanie! After I'm done commenting I'll go check out what greg has to say about it. Family time is indeed precious. Even though it's number 7 on the list it's probably the most important! Thanks again for the visit!

Hi Keith! This is a great post. Our girls are 6-months-old and 3-years-old so we're not quite doing formal schooling yet, but we are planning to homeschool in the years to come (for many of the same reasons that you listed, especially #7).

P.S. You might be interested in reading another dad's take on homeschooling here): http://greggharrisblog.blogspot.com/2005/11/priceless-treasure-why-i-choose-to.html. I recently stumbled on that post and the author makes some excellent points.
