throwing away money

I wrote a guest post today over at Wylie Mom where I talk about how parents tend to waste giant gobs of money on things like food, transportation, clothes and rent.  People, regardless of marital status or kids, waste money.  In today’s economy we can’t afford to do that anymore.  Last year I had everything going for me, but this year I have hit a financial rough patch.  The turn from big spender to frugal dad has been slow.  I still want my kids to have all the best things, all parents want that for their kids.  There are ways to do it without breaking the bank.  It’s just a big learning process.  Go read the article, and enjoy all the other money saving articles that Angie has to offer.  She has also helpfully linked to other resources for those of us dealing with this troubling economy.  Read More…

throwing away money

Nice article. ;) I can say proudly that I myself am the frugal QUEEN. We pay $600/month on a rent-to-own home and 2 1/2 acres of nice, rural land. I buy 99.9% of the family’s clothes at garage sales and thrift stores, I buy generic EVERYTHING, and our family’s entertainment budget is cable tv and the gas it takes to get to the park, with an occasional trip to the science museum.

It absolutely BAFFLES me to see how much money some people will constantly spend on some unnecessary new doodad or thingamajig…and then complain that they’re broke all the time!

I think the issue is that we are a society of consumers:
Consuming more is good. Less – bad.
Children just want that special snickers that cost twice as others, just because their friends have them.
The picture is that who has more is happier, Nowadays this is the slogan. But it is not true.
But you can’t argue with someone who now has money. They don’t “see” it.
The change has to come from inside.
Hope we see a change in the near future. I share your point of view.
    Julio.
